April’s Stamp of the Month was chosen for its double oval cancellation which was applied in Lackawanna NY. The 8-cent stamp may have paid the first class airmail rate for a letter up to one ounce in weight mailed within one of the three zones the Postal Service divided the country into at that time. Nothing is unusual about the cancellation other than Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) seems to be peering through the cancellation, adding a layer of appealing graphic interest.
