On June 1, 1948, Korea issued two stamps marking their participation in the 1948 London Summer Olympics, Korea’s historic debut as an independent nation. The high value, shown here, features an Olympic Torchbearer and a map of Korea. The Korean Olympic Committee, established in 1946, sent a delegation of 50 athletes, solely from the South, to compete in seven sports. The nation won its first-ever Olympic medals—two bronzes.
