On September 22, 1954, Greece issued a set six “Ink Blot” stamps. They have a common design but different color border for each denomination. The stamps represent political propaganda and protest by Greece against Great Britain over the control of Cyprus. The British government essentially declared that Cyprus—which wanted union with Greece—would never be granted full independence or allowed to unify with Greece. The stamps were a visual metaphor arguing that Britain’s refusal to grant self-determination to Cyprus was a dark, shameful stain on British democratic values and parliamentary history.
