This 1-anna stamp from Hyderabad features the Charminar (four minarets) constructed in 1591 which includes a mosque on its top floor. It is thought the Charminar was built to commemorate the eradication of plague, a deadly disease widespread at that time. Hyderabad, formerly a Feudatory State, is now part of India. Today the Charimar, in addition to being historically and religiously significant, is surrounded by busy local markets and has become one of the most frequented tourist attractions in Hyderabad.
