In February 1975, Czechoslovakia issued a set of four stamps featuring hunting scenes from old engravings. The 60 heller stamp reproduced the engraving “Still-life with Hare” by the Bohemian Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677) which in turn had been adapted from a hunting still life by Flemish painter Pieter Boel (1622-1674). The stamp was engraved by Bedřich Housa (1926-2020), the renowned Czech engraver. (I highly recommend the memoir Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton that eloquently explores a hare’s life, human-animal bonds, trust and freedom.)
